Sponda’s Kvartsi selected for the second phase of the Pasila Tower Area competition
Sponda’s design plan, titled Kvartsi, has been included in the second phase of the Helsinki High-Rise Design Competition. The purpose of the competition, arranged by the City of Helsinki and Senate Properties, is to select a design solution and an implementer for the central Pasila Tower Area.
“Sponda wants to be involved in the development of functional and feasible cityscape that will serve the city’s residents in the future as well. In addition, Pasila’s reputation as a traffic and service hub will also be emphasised. We are extremely delighted to hear that Kvartsi has been selected for the second phase of the competition,” says Senior Vice President Veli-Pekka Tanhuanpää.
Four plans were selected for the second phase of the competition by a quality assessment. The assessment emphasised the plans’ functionality, feasibility and suitability in the urban space. The plans were also evaluated from the perspectives of sustainable development, phased execution and development potential.
“In the next phase of the competition, we will begin to design the plan further together with the competition organisers in order to complete Sponda’s design plan by summer 2018,” Tanhuanpää continues.
The competition winner selection process will especially emphasise the proposal’s city planning criteria. The winner of the competition will be chosen by the Helsinki City Council and Senate Properties in autumn 2018.
The winner of the competition shall have the right and obligation to purchase the building rights of the Start-Up Area at unit prices specified beforehand, and implement the complex according to its plan. The Start-Up Area is located south of the Pasila bridge, between Pasilankatu and Veturitie, and it includes at least 40,000-65,000 floor square metres. The construction work is set to begin in 2020-2021.
