Sponda’s Citycenter shopping centre in the heart of Helsinki will become even more appealing for visitors

Sponda, one of Finland’s leading real estate asset management companies, is currently renovating the Citycenter shopping centre in the heart of Helsinki by giving the shopping centre a facelift to enhance the shopping experience for its customers. Also the functionality of the premises and the offerings of Citycenter will be developed to better serve the shopping centre’s customers and its stores.

Public spaces and facilities across three floors of the shopping centre are being refurbished with new measures including increasing the lighting in the buildingrenovation of the suspended ceilings to create the sensation of a bigger space and the remodelling of existing floor surfaces.

The renovation will utilise materials traditionally used at the time the original property was built, such as brass, wood and concrete surfaces. The building’s interiors will also be enriched with accent colours and discreet black will be used for the shop façades.

“We want to renovate Citycenter as a place for all of the city’s residents and visitors to shop, spend time and enjoy. The renovation, which is currently underway, is a continuation of the renovations started in 2019, where the K1 floor was updated to become more closely aligned with the building’s unique heritage. This time, we are harmonising the shopping centre’s overall design and improving the customer’s shopping experience on every floor. In addition to the facelift, we are continuously striving to develop Citycenter by introducing new interesting brands and great services that our customers appreciate. By renewing and enlivening Citycenter, we are also adding to the attraction of the city centre,” said Kirsi Kemppainen, Sponda’s Head of Shopping Centres and Marketing.

The project began in December 2021 with the construction of new high-quality customer restrooms in the popular restaurant hub, located on the second floor, where they will better serve customers of the numerous restaurants. The renovation project is due to be completed by autumn 2022.

LUX Helsinki and the Moomin characters bring experientiality to Citycenter

Citycenter’s spring season started spectacularly with the shopping centre taking part in the LUX Helsinki light festival. Light artist Otso Vartiainen’s BLING THE ROOF artwork illuminated the shopping centre’s roof from many different directions. Later in the spring, Digital Nature will introduce Moomin characters to Citycenter as a part of an interactive art installation. Visitors will be able to explore the world of the characters through animation and digital enactments. The compelling exhibition is the first of its kind and will add to the liveliness and attraction of the Helsinki city centre, while increasing Citycenter’s brand offering.

Citycenter also serves business customers who value high-quality office premises with its central location and excellent services. The premium office premises have been renovated since 2019, and Sponda is further upgrading the office floors to serve its high-quality office tenants’ needs.

Sustainability is an integral part of Citycenter’s operations. All of Sponda’s shopping centres are environmentally certified at the BREEAM Very Good level and it invests heavily in energy efficiency and recycling. Electricity for the shopping centres is generated at the Lakiakangas wind farm, and the solar power plant on the roof of Citycenter has produced emission free electricity for the shopping centre since September 2021.
