Sponda ranked as number one real estate company for sustainability practices in its European peer group in the 2024 GRESB Real Estate Assessment

Sponda, one of Finland’s leading real estate asset management companies, has secured the number one position in its European peer group in the GRESB Real Estate Assessment 2024 (Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark).

2024 marks the twelth consecutive year that Sponda has maintained its strong position at the forefront of the most sustainable real estate companies who participate in the GRESB assessment.

In its peer group (Diversified – Office/Retail) in the Standing Investments benchmark, Sponda achieved 94 points, including the maximum points available in sustainability leadership, policies, reporting, risk management and stakeholder engagement, target settings, tenants and community engagement, as well as data monitoring and review. Sponda also achieved the maximum points available in areas such as climate related risk management and net zero targets, both of which were scored for the first time in the GRESB assessment this year. The maximum points available in the management component consolidates Sponda’s position as an ESG leader.

In its peer group (Mixed use) in the Development benchmark Sponda scored an impressive 100 points, the highest possible score in all areas of the assessment, including for ESG requirements, materials, building certifications, energy, water, waste and stakeholder engagement.

“For twelve years in a row, we have been among the top GRESB scoring companies worldwide in our field. Sustainability is of paramount importance in today’s business landscape, and strong sustainability credentials are an important consideration for companies looking for new office premises. The built environment contributes to one third of global greenhouse gas emissions, and as a sustainable real estate owner we want to take decisive action in reducing our environmental impact. There is still more work to be done, but we are more than ready to face the future with enthusiasm and determination”, says Sponda’s CEO Christian Hohenthal.

Sponda’s top scores in the Development benchmark underscore the company’s long-term commitment to sustainable construction, as seen in recent development projects in Tikkurila, Vantaa, and Mannerheimintie 14 in Helsinki, both of which were part of this year’s GRESB assessment. Sponda aims consistently for LEED Platinum or BREEAM Excellent certifications across its portfolio and is reducing the carbon footprint of its buildings throughout their lifecycle with a commitment to increasing its own renewable energy production.

GRESB assesses environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices and data of real estate companies and funds, providing an ESG benchmark for real estate and infrastructure investments worldwide.
