Sponda Plc: Citycenter shopping centre receives a BREEAM environmental certificate
The Citycenter shopping centre located in the heart of Helsinki has been awarded BREEAM In-Use Very Good certification. The certification applies to the property’s technical attributes and maintenance. As of August 2017, Sponda has 15 certified properties and several certification projects in progress.
“Citycenter, located in the Makkaratalo, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and it is a notable accomplishment for a prestigious building of this age to achieve such excellent certification results. Measures have been implemented at Citycenter to develop energy efficiency and reduce water consumption, for example. The shopping centre has an ideal location in the heart of the central business district, which provides excellent public transport connections,” says Hannamari Koivula, Sustainability Manager at Sponda. Green Building Partners was responsible for the guidance and auditing in BREEAM certification.
In addition to the environmental certification and the measures related to energy efficiency, the Citycenter concept has also renewed this year. The most prominent change is the new restaurant zone, scheduled to open in late 2017, with more than 1,000 m2 of restaurants ranging from street food to classics.
“Shopping centres have become living rooms for the city’s residents. People enjoy spending time in shopping centres, so expanding the selection of restaurants and cafés represents our response to the consumers’ wishes. There are also several new restaurant and café operators set to open in Asematunneli this autumn, including Cacik and Espresso House. In addition to our renewed concept, we have a comprehensive range of new stores to bring joy to our customers,” says Tiina Fågel, Citycenter’s Shopping Centre Manager.
