Sponda’s Sustainability Review 2025 – climate and energy efficiency targets were exceeded again

According to the 2025 Sustainability Review published by Sponda Ltd, one of Finland’s leading real estate asset management companies, the company successfully exceeded its climate and energy efficiency targets last year. Sponda was again named a Global Sector Leader and shared the number one position globally in its peer group in the 2025 GRESB (Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark) assessment.

In 2025, Sponda successfully advanced its sustainability goals and developed a new sustainability programme for the next three years 2026-2028. The new programme places increased emphasis on circularity, biodiversity and social responsibility across the value chain.

“I am proud of the sustained progress we have achieved in our sustainability work. The results of our long-term efforts show significant and tangible improvements across our properties, value chain and operating practices. Sustainability is a competitive factor for us, supporting our customers’ success, strengthening our business and creating long-term value for society”, says Sponda’s CEO Christian Hohenthal.

Significant investments in environmental sustainability and communities

In 2025, Sponda achieved several significant milestones in its sustainability activities:

  • In the GRESB assessment, Sponda shared the number one position globally in its peer group as one of the most sustainable real estate companies and was named the Global Sector Leader. The company has been among the top performers in its peer group for over a decade.
  • Sponda published its new Sustainability Programme for 2026-2028, which places increased emphasis on circularity, biodiversity and social responsibility across the value chain.
  • All Sponda properties operate on emissionfree energy, and value chain emissions (Scope 3) were reduced by over 35% from the 2019 baseline, supporting Sponda’s SBTi‑approved target to cut emissions by 46.2% by 2030.
  • Sponda has improved the energy ratings of its properties. By the end of 2025, 43.7% of the portfolio (by value) had reached EPC A or B, with targets of 60% by 2026 and 70% for prime properties, mainly in central Helsinki.
  • By the end of 2025, Sponda had reduced energy consumption across its portfolio by 17.6% (compared to the 2016–2018 average), achieving nearly 6,000 MWh in energy savings through targeted energy measures last year.
  • Sponda achieved two new environmental certifications and two re-certifications last year, and 92% of the company’s properties (by property value) were BREEAM or LEED certified by the end of 2025.
  • Circular economy: Reuse of construction materials and products (such as suspended ceiling tiles, flooring, and building services equipment) was increased in Sponda’s projects, with 24 tonnes directed to reuse in 2025.
  • Sponda continued to invest in biodiversity in accordance with its sustainability strategy. 97% of Sponda’s properties (by sqm) had implemented actions that promote biodiversity.
  • Sponda’s shopping centres hosted 141 community events, including Earth Hour and Helsinki Pride, reaching over 2 million people. In addition, Sponda’s employees devoted 400 working hours to volunteer work.

“I’m very pleased with our results and Sponda’s new sustainability programme, through which we will continue our work to advance emission reduction, energy efficiency and the circular economy. While improving the performance of our properties and supporting our customers’ own sustainability goals, we also emphasise social responsibility and robust governance practices alongside our environmental efforts”, says Sponda’s Head of ESG Pirkko Airaksinen.
